Hear the gravity.

Functional ear training. A drone holds the key center while a single note plays. Your job: identify the scale degree. Not the note name — the function. Is it home? Tension? Somewhere between? This is how working musicians hear.

/ WHY DEGREES MATTER MORE THAN NOTE NAMES
Transposition Is Free

If you learn that degree 5 wants to resolve to degree 1, that knowledge works in every key. G wants to resolve to C. D wants to resolve to G. The note names change. The feeling does not.

The Drone Is Your Anchor

The tonic drone establishes the key center. Every other note is heard relative to it. Degree 7 sounds tense because it is one semitone from home, not because of the specific frequency. Context creates meaning.

Start With 1, 3, 5

The tonic triad is the foundation. Degree 1 is home. Degree 5 is the anchor. Degree 3 is the color (major or minor). Master these three and the others fall into place — they are the passing tones between the pillars.

Solfege Connection

Do-Re-Mi-Fa-Sol-La-Ti. Moveable-do solfege is the same idea: syllables represent function, not pitch. The buttons show both numbers and solfege syllables. Use whichever clicks for you.

/ WHAT EACH DEGREE FEELS LIKE
1 — Do

Home. Complete rest. Resolution. Every journey ends here (or begins here).

2 — Re

Gentle forward motion. Not tense, not resolved. A passing note that leans toward 1 or reaches to 3.

3 — Mi

The color note. In major it sounds bright and sweet. In minor (lowered) it sounds dark and plaintive. The third defines the mode.

4 — Fa

Subdominant weight. Pulls downward to 3 but can also push to 5. The plagal ("amen") cadence lands here.

5 — Sol

The dominant. Second strongest after 1. It pulls hard toward home. The V-I cadence is the most powerful resolution in tonal music.

6 — La

Relative major/minor territory. In major it has a gentle, warm quality. It is the root of the relative minor — same notes, different center.

7 — Ti

Maximum tension. The leading tone. One semitone from home. It creates the strongest pull of any scale degree. The whole dominant function depends on it.
